These words and phrases are the buzzwords du jour – but deserve so much more than to be relegated to a trendy lexicon.
Why is workplace wellness important?
Because all of these terms are inextricably linked; you can’t have one without the other. But health and wellness don’t start or stop at home, especially when you consider that the average U.S. employee spends nearly 47 hours per week at work – or 9.4 hours per day – with many saying they work 50 hours per week.
Workplace wellness is knowing your employer is keeping you safe. It’s providing employees resources for mental health, healthy living, and true work-life balance.
Wellness is what comes as a result of an employer focused on safety.
From promoting work-life balance, to providing mental health resources and support, to giving access to education and training, to encouraging and supporting employees to participate in health and wellness activities, such as step challenges, water challenges, and fitness activities, there is no shortage of opportunities for companies to foster and promote wellness in the workplace.
It’s a holistic, all-encompassing approach to safety and wellness; safety, health and wellness are not discrete, siloed concepts – which is why we’ve dedicated so many articles and resources to it.

“More than ever, employees agree that mental health should be a priority to their employers, and therefore they seek out opportunities with organizations that support and encourage mental health wellness and a healthy work-life balance. In fact, according to a recent report, 85% of workers identified mental and emotional health benefits as a consideration when evaluating a new job opportunity.

“Conventional, and arguably dated, wisdom suggests that if we pay employees enough, they’ll be productive. But recent studies now suggest otherwise: Researchers have discovered a link between employees’ happiness and their productivity at work.
“And for those companies that have taken this seriously and acted accordingly, they’ve already begun to experience the payoff.
“A recent study by economists at the University of Warwick found that happiness led to a 12% increase in productivity, while unhappy workers proved 10% less productive. As the research team put it, ‘We find that human happiness has large and positive causal effects on productivity. Positive emotions appear to invigorate human beings.’”

“Mental illness affects people from all walks of life. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), as many as one in five Americans is affected by a mental health condition.
“Unfortunately, work can exacerbate the symptoms that accompany common psychological conditions like depression and anxiety, and workplace environments can trigger the development of mental illness in previously healthy individuals.
Given the connection between our jobs and our mental health, we’d like to take some time to spotlight one of eLearning’s lesser-known applications: helping to improve mental health.”
“Happy, educated employees are retained employees. Studies show that approximately 40 percent of employees who do not receive adequate training end up leaving their post within just one year.
“In fact, occupational training programs grew significantly last year, as more than one-quarter of workplace learning and development leaders saw their budgets increase, according to research from LinkedIn. More significantly, an estimated 69 percent indicated that the executives at their respective organizations saw talent development as the top priority.
“But while addressing evolving workplace training challenges and trends is certainly important, HR leaders and other learning and development stakeholders should remember to devote energy toward the basics – essential instructional topics that maintain their relevance, despite churning headlines.”
