OSHA’s electronic recordkeeping submission deadline is March 2nd! Are you prepared?

OSHA periodically updates its workplace injury reporting standards. The agency did just that in May 2016, publishing the “Final Rule to Improve Tracking of Workplace Injuries and Illnesses,” which requires certain employers to electronically submit OSHA recordkeeping logs to OSHA by March 2, 2019.


Understanding the basics

Establishments with 20-249 employees in high risk industries are required to submit all data fields currently contained in their 2017 OSHA form 300A.

Initially, in addition to submitting 300A form data, the final rule also required establishments with 250 or more employees to electronically submit data contained in OSHA forms 300, and 301. However, in January of 2019, OSHA published a new final rule to remove the collection of Form 300 and Form 301 data in order to protect worker privacy. As it stands, establishments with 250 or more employees still need to prepare to submit the required 2018 Form 300A data.

Environmental health and safety stakeholders should submit this data using the web-based Injury Tracking Application. The submission process consists of four steps:

  1. If you have not already done so, create an establishment within the ITA.
  2. Add 300A summary information.
  3. Submit the raw injury data.
  4. Review the resulting confirmation email.
