Top 10 eLearning Predictions for 2018

As 2017 comes to a close, all eyes turn to the eLearning landscape of 2018. It should come as no surprise that the industry is predicted to grow. But how much exactly?

According to Research and Markets, the global eLearning market is poised to grow at a CAGR of around 7.2% over the next decade to reach approximately $325 billion by 2025.

Here, in no particular order, are the top 10 eLearning predictions to watch for in 2018.

  1. Gamification. Gamification now represents a large portion of eLearning, with over 80% of students saying that learning would be more effective if it were more game-based. And with worldwide revenues for game-based learning closing around $2.6 billion in 2016, those numbers are predicted to reach $7.3 billion by 2021.


  1. Microlearning. On average, an employee only has 1 percent of their work week to devote to professional development. This means that eLearning courses need to supply learners with short, easy-to-consume course material to promote quick consumption and longer knowledge retention.   1. Video-based learning. By 2019, videos will be responsible for 80% of the internet traffic in the world, according to a new report by Cisco. As such, video-based learning is gaining momentum because it is able to hold the learner’s attention as they are engaging, interactive, interesting and easy to absorb.


  1. Mobile learning. Reports suggest that 70% of learners felt more motivated when training on a mobile device as opposed to a computer. With mobile learners studying for 40 minutes longer and completing course material 45 percent faster than those using a computer, it’s no surprise that M-learning is predicted to be a $37.6 billion market by 2020.


  1. Responsive eLearning design. In line with predictions for M-learning market growth, the need for responsive courses is overwhelming. So eLearning authoring tools need to build responsive courses to fit the resolution of all devices to improve the learning experience, allow ease of use, and improve accessibility for learners.


  1. Virtual and augmented reality. While neither is necessarily new, the technology has been somewhat substandard and expensive. But as each becomes easier to produce and more cost-effective, their potential is sizeable as immersive learning is preferred by the new digital generations that make up today’s workforce. VR and AR courses offer more in depth training for high-risk industries, helping professionals be better prepared.


  1. Social learning. The 2016 Towards Maturity Benchmark Report showed an overwhelming 98% of organizations want to support the sharing and surfacing of good practices across the business, with in-house social networking increasing by 55%, making it one of the fastest-growing tools for enterprise learning.


  1. xAPI. While Experience API may still take some time to gain widespread adoption, the concept of experience-based learning programs holds great promise. The idea of having all the different systems used within an organization communicate with the LMS platforms is quickly gaining the attention of businesses.


  1. Open platforms. With more and more incredible courses and resources available online, companies are moving away from expensive proprietary learning management systems and opting instead for more open, flexible systems.


  1. Content curation. Learning content that covers standardized subjects such as regulatory training, general professional skills development or external certifications means that content libraries can be stocked with curated content, leaving time and budget to focus on more specialized learning solutions.


Just how much eLearning will grow in 2018 remains to be seen but if trends, reports and forecasts are any indication, the industry has boundless potential for growth, and these 10 predictions should make the ‘Must Watch’ list for the year to come.
