Women working in carpentry, cement masonry, sheet-metal, iron working, electrical and other construction trades face the same challenges that men do, plus some challenges that men don’t. Machines and tools are typically designed for bigger people. There’s a difficulty finding PPE that fits properly. And sometimes, the work culture can be unwelcoming and even abusive with sexual discrimination and harassment, and more.
During this video interview, Hannah Curtis, a Research Coordinator at the University of Washington School of Public Health and part of the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences describes a study called SHEWT, Safety and Health Empowerment for Women in Trades. She also outlines some of the top challenges women in construction trades are facing today.
