Top Industrial Training Challenges: Breaking Down Barriers

Industrial training can improve safety, inform workers of new procedures and make it easier to integrate new equipment or technology into the workplace. Effective training programs can also establish a culture of continual improvement that gives a company an edge against competitors. Many industrial organizations have begun to prioritize training, but they are still learning the best ways to do so. A recent Safety+Health survey brought together data from a variety of organizations and found that many professionals face major barriers when it comes to finding success with training, particularly when it comes to safety.

One overarching theme of the survey is that many of the challenges that come with industrial training can be solved when training leaders get help – be it from third-party specialists or supervisors and executives.

Major training challenges and what to do about them
The study identified five key training issues that industrial organizations are grappling with. These included:

  • Dealing with language barriers.
  • Finding ways to keep messaging from getting stale.
  • Getting support from leadership.
  • Creating enough time for training.
  • Keeping workers engaged.

These issues all added up to major challenges for industrial organizations, and one respondent highlighted how past mistakes have taught him to get help when possible to improve messaging and ensure training efforts are successful.

“[They’re is] not enough room to type all my mistakes, but a few of them were: trying to do it all myself (and) not getting supervisors involved with the training; not utilizing enough outside resources to aid with the training; not using outside speakers,” the respondent said.

Taking advantage of third-party resources
Online training courses can be especially invaluable when it comes to finding help with industrial training and skills development. eLearning can be invaluable in a few key ways, including:

  • Convenience: Course material can be made available anywhere with a network connection, making it much easier to find time to fit training into busy schedules.
  • Engagement: Digital technologies make it easy to integrate quizzes and other interactive activities into courses to keep employees focused.
  • Innovation: Augmented and virtual reality technologies are allowing eLearning leaders to establish sophisticated content types that provide greater levels of interactivity to online courses.

eLearning can provide many of the benefits of an in-person court, and do so in a way that is both convenient for end users and cost-efficient for businesses. Getting help from third-party training specialists can help industrial leaders overcome many of the challenges they are facing when trying to fuel employee skills development.
