This course addresses provisions in the 2021 International Building Code (IBC®) and references standards related to the design and construction of care facilities. It is designed to help participants determine and apply the appropriate care facility provisions, whether the facility is a hospital, ambulatory care facility, daycare, or some other use.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Determine the appropriate occupancy classification based on the attributes of the respective care facility
  • Explain the three different levels of care facilities addressed by the IBC® – medical care, custodial care, and personal care services
  • Describe the significant special provisions for the various levels of medical care facilities (Group I-2 hospitals, nursing homes, detoxification facilities, and Group B ambulatory care facilities)
  • Explain the different fire protection and life safety features (sprinklers, alarms, and detection systems) required in each type of care facility
  • Identify the provisions that show how care facilities are regulated differently from other types of use in terms of egress and accessibility requirements
