Lab Safety Series: Planning for Emergencies
This course teaches laboratory personnel how to develop and implement comprehensive emergency action plans that address the unique hazards present in laboratory environments, including fires, chemical spills, splash exposures, toxic gas releases, cryogen incidents, utility failures, and medical emergencies. Based on OSHA’s Emergency Action Plan standard (29 CFR 1910.38) and Laboratory Safety Guidance, this course covers essential elements of emergency preparedness including hazard assessment, emergency roles and responsibilities, reporting and communication protocols, evacuation and shelter-in-place procedures, and the critical distinction between incidents requiring evacuation versus those appropriate for limited response. Through real-world case studies such as the Texas Tech laboratory explosion and cryogen transport incidents, participants learn that effective emergency response depends on advance planning, clear role assignments, proper training, regular drills, and a laboratory culture that prioritizes life safety over process continuity, ultimately helping reduce injuries, property damage, and confusion during urgent situations.
