Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, you will be able to:
  • Identify the most important changes in the LEED Rating System under Version 4 compared with LEED 2009 and demonstrate how the new rating system goals impact the health of people and communities.
  • Describe the integrative design process and how it would impact the early stages of designing a LEED project.
  • Describe the separation of Sustainable Sites credits into two categories and how they encourage strategies that minimize impact on eco-systems and water resources.
  • List the changes in the Materials & Resources category. Describe how to utilize Building Product Disclosures from manufacturers to achieve LEED credits and disclose the health, safety and environmental hazard and risk of chemical ingredients.

Author

Roxanne Button is the founder and principal of Design Synergies, a sustainable design and consulting firm located in Upstate New York. She is a licensed architect in New York and a LEED Accredited Professional (BD+C; Homes) who has been involved in sustainable design in both the U.S. and Canada for over 20 years. She holds undergraduate degrees in Urban/Economic Geography and Environmental Design Studies, as well as a Master's degree in Architecture from the Technical University of Nova Scotia. Roxanne's diverse experience includes green building design and consulting, scriptwriting for a green renovation TV series, and managing LEED projects. Roxanne is a former board member for the New York Upstate Chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council, and a current member of the Board Advisory Panel. Roxanne has presented numerous seminars on LEED and green building. She led the team that created Public Day for the American Solar Energy Conference in 2009 and co-hosted a monthly Green Drinks networking event. As a member of the national education reviewers Team for USGBC, Roxanne contributed to the development of educational programs for fellow LEED Accredited Professionals, including the annual Greenbuild conference. She is also a GPRO-certified trainer, conducting workshops for construction professionals on green and LEED projects.
