Certification for Construction Project Managers

Certified construction project managers must complete a minimum of eight hours on “Ways of Working.” These courses cover the technical aspects of project management, including the key knowledge, skills, and behaviors PMPs need. This can include risk and scope management, scheduling, project controls, and more.

The next corner of PMI’s Talent Triangle is Business Acumen. PMPs must complete eight hours of study on this topic, which covers strategic and business management. These courses focus on connecting the dots between project management and larger organization strategy and objectives.

The final mandatory PMI requirement is at least eight hours learning “Power Skills.” These are leadership competencies that are essential to construction project managers being successful. Core topics include motivation, negotiation, conflict management, giving and receiving feedback, and team building.

To earn a Certified Construction Manager certification from CMAA, at least one hour must be focused on either construction safety or ethics.
