New Law Enforcement Training Courses: Enhancing Driver Safety

For law enforcement, driving is an integral part of the job. Whether out on patrol, responding to a 911 call, or in pursuit of a suspect, officers need the training and confidence to be ready to make split-second decisions every single time they get behind the wheel.

Recognizing this critical need and to best support our law enforcement partners, Vector Solutions is excited to announce the release of three new law enforcement training courses focused on driving techniques.

The content for each course was created in partnership with subject matter experts, who each have hands-on experience in the field, and is designed to engage and educate participants through an interactive multimedia experience.

New Law Enforcement Online Training Courses

Adjusting to Changing Driving Conditions (1 Hour)

Motor vehicle crashes remain a significant concern on U.S. roadways. Research reveals that 94% of crashes are linked to human error or choice, highlighting the potential for prevention. Environmental conditions such as weather, visibility, and road surface quality significantly impact driving safety, affecting traction, stability, and crash risk.

This interactive online course focuses on identifying hazardous conditions, adapting driving behavior to ensure safety, and managing driving emergencies effectively.

In this course, officers will learn how to:

• Discuss state-specific laws related to driving in hazardous environmental conditions.

• Discuss essential survival strategies for driving in hazardous environmental conditions.
• Describe how to handle various driving emergencies.

Distracted Driving (1 Hour)

Distracted driving is a pervasive issue that impacts drivers across all scenarios, and law enforcement officers are no exception. In fact, patrol officers often face heightened distractions due to the demands of their duties, including operating complex equipment, monitoring surroundings, and responding to emergencies—all while maintaining their focus on safe driving.

Given their responsibility to protect others and set a positive example on the road, it is essential for law enforcement professionals to recognize and mitigate distractions. This interactive online course explores the challenges of distracted driving in patrol environments, its effects on driving performance, and strategies to reduce these risks.

In this course, officers will learn how to:

• Describe the problems associated with distracted driving
• Identify distracted driving situations
• Identify ways to avoid distracted driving in patrol vehicles

Defensive Driving Strategies (1 Hour)

This interactive online course explores the principles and practices of defensive driving to help drivers anticipate, mitigate, and respond to road hazards effectively. By understanding and applying defensive driving techniques, officers will be better equipped to avoid collisions and navigate roadways safely. The course covers key strategies for hazard anticipation, recognition, and appropriate response, as well as the importance of proactive driving behaviors. Upon completion, officers will have the knowledge and skills to reduce the risk of vehicle crashes and improve overall driving safety.

In this course, officers will learn how to:

• Identify the necessity for driving defensively
• Define defensive driving
• Describe how to drive defensively
• Define strategies for anticipating driving hazards
• Explain how to recognize various driving hazards that may be encountered
• Describe how to respond appropriately to a driving hazard
