FERPA is a federal law that grants parents and eligible students certain rights concerning educational records, including the right to access, the right to request an amendment, the right to consent to disclosures, and the right to file a complaint.
According to the Federal Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (CAPTA), it is the responsibility and legal obligation of certain individuals, like teachers, to report suspected or known instances of child neglect and mistreatment to the authorities for further investigation. In nearly every state, teachers, principals, and other school personnel are mandatory reporters. While training requirements vary by state, many states require that mandatory reporters be provided training to inform them of their responsibility to report suspected child abuse and neglect and the process for making reports.
