Suicide Prevention Awareness Month: Supporting First Responders with Better Insight

September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month and the commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. As the month comes to an end, we are reminded of the continual importance of, and need for, supporting one another, especially our first responders.

In the CDC article "Suicides Among First Responders: A Call to Action," first responders are identified as being at an elevated risk for suicide over the general population (whose rate has increased 33% since 1999) due to the environment, culture, and stress of emergency services. Among several alarming statistics, the article identifies firefighters and law enforcement officers as more likely to die by suicide than in the line of duty, and EMS providers as 1.39 times more likely than the public to die of suicide. As distressing as these statistics are, suicide is preventable.

Vector Solutions is proud to offer Guardian Tracking, an Early Intervention (EI) system designed to catch trending behaviors and potential issues that may stem from critical incidents and triggering events.

With Guardian Tracking, your department can:

  • Protect the health and well-being of your first responders.
  • Flag firefighters for increased screening to catch cancer sooner.
  • Identify first responders who might need additional mental health support.
  • Document how you protect the health of your team.
  • Minimize absenteeism, burnout, and hours lost to illness.

Guardian Tracking is a unique tool that empowers agencies with valuable insight into changing behaviors, which enables better decision-making and faster response.
