The outbreak of the coronavirus (COVID-19) entered a new and potentially more dangerous phase this week, with new infections in the United States and Germany attributed to patients who had no known connections to others with the illness. As of Feb. 27, the pathogen has spread to at least 47 countries, forced travel restrictions and border closings in some places, and now has health officials in the U.S. warning Americans to brace for an all but certain impact in the united states.

From a travel risk management perspective, the virus has caused some major companies and universities to either scale back or cancel overseas business travel and student exchange programs.

But business and education travel continues to and from other parts of the world. So the question is, what are the potential challenges that companies and universities should be aware of and prepared for, and what types of information and resources should they provide access to that will help their employees avoid bad decisions that could put them in harm’s way.

To help us understand the risk management and duty of care aspects of the current coronavirus threat is Joe Gleason, the Director of Risk Management at AHT Insurance. Joe has many years of experience working on risk and security operations for large non-governmental organizations around the world.
