Key Questions
Hazing refers to any activity required for joining or participating in a group that humiliates, degrades, abuses, or endangers individuals, regardless of their consent.
Why do groups participate in hazing? Some groups believe hazing is necessary for bonding and group cohesion. However, hazing is not an appropriate bonding technique and will not create genuine relationships, especially with those who perpetrated the hazing.
What are the warning signs of someone experiencing hazing?Common signs of hazing include sleep deprivation, excessive drinking, and extreme physical exertion, which affect mood and well-being. If someone seems tired, anxious, depressed, or physically harmed (e.g., bruises, burns, exhaustion), it’s important to ask them about it. Hazing often happens in secret, so if they hesitate to explain, express concern, and inquire about hazing.
What are the consequences of hazing?Hazing can lead to significant criminal, civil, and academic penalties for those found guilty. While not all states have anti-hazing laws, many have passed laws making hazing a misdemeanor, with some considering it a felony if injury or death occurs. In certain states, planners of hazing activities may also be held responsible, even if they aren’t directly involved in the act.

Unfortunately, not everything we learn on TV is correct. Hazing is far more common than you might believe, and it doesn’t just happen in fraternities and sororities. Some of the people who experience hazing think they’re having fun. And many times, rituals are considered normal parts of belonging in a community. However, hazing isn’t a benign part of belonging. It can have devastating, even deadly consequences. This course will give you a better understanding of hazing so that you can identify when it’s happening and possibly prevent disastrous incidents from occurring in the future.
