Erin McClintock is a Learning Experience Designer and Content Strategist who utilizes behavioral science to create engaging and impactful digital experiences. Over the past 15 years, she has served as a practitioner, data storyteller, and consultant at the intersection of mental health, behavior change, and technology. Erin began her career as a clinical mental health counselor, and held a variety of roles in the mental health and well-being sector within K12, higher education, and community wellness before moving into the world of tech in 2016. She holds a graduate degree in Mental Health Counseling and completed her post-master’s education in trauma and addiction counseling.

What does mental well-being encompass?

Mental well-being encompasses all aspects of life, such as your emotions, finances, social life, spiritual journey, career, physical health, intellectual pursuits, and your surroundings.

What is self-talk?

“Self-talk” refers to the way we communicate with ourselves. It can sometimes be beneficial, such as calming our nerves before a big game or test. However, it can turn negative when it impacts our self-esteem or confidence.

What are common physical signs of stress?

Physical signs of excessive stress can include changes in appetite, such as overeating unhealthy foods or losing one’s appetite. Other symptoms might include difficulty falling asleep or sleeping too much, feeling anxious, lacking energy, or experiencing sadness or depression.

What are common symptoms of depression?

Some common signs of depression are losing interest in activities you once enjoyed, like spending time with friends or playing sports, having trouble focusing in class or finishing assignments, and feeling overwhelmed by hopelessness or discouragement.

Throughout this course, we will explore challenges to mental well-being in college, self-management strategies, help-seeking tools and resources, and steps you can take to support yourself and your peers. This course aims to provide you with information and skills that will contribute to your success in college and life. Well-being encompasses all aspects of your life, such as your emotions, finances, social life, spiritual journey, career, physical health, intellectual pursuits, and surroundings. You may be doing very well in one aspect of your well-being but still face challenges in another. What is mental well-being? Mental well-being is knowing and doing what makes you happy, living a life that aligns with your values, and engaging in meaningful relationships with others. It also means understanding yourself and your baselines and seeking out help if you do experience mental health challenges.
