Paraeducators: Strategies for Managing Small Groups

One of the lingering impacts of the pandemic is a significant increase in students who need support in order to succeed academically and socially. While many paraeducators were used to working with one student at a time, dwindling resources and increasing needs mean they often work with small groups. Managing a small group comes with unique challenges and opportunities: done successfully, it can provide a wealth of benefits to both the students and the paraeducator. This course will examine the difference between supporting students on an individual basis or in a small group, strategies for differentiating instruction in a small group, the basics of managing small group behavior, and effective data collection in the small group setting.
