Trauma Awareness

Trauma is the psychological response to a life event or experience that’s deeply disturbing or distressing to an individual. Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are negative life events witnessed or experienced firsthand by children 18 years old or younger. ACEs may affect a person’s emotional and cognitive abilities, overwhelming them and limiting their academic potential. This course is designed to help school staff recognize the signs of trauma so they can help those students suffering from its effects. Topics covered include the main sources of trauma in school-age children, the categories of abusive behaviors, the effects of neglect and household challenges, and trauma signs and symptoms, as well as risk factors and the impact on future development.

Key Questions

How does trauma affect a person’s emotions?

Trauma can overwhelm a person’s emotions, causing confusion, anxiety, and a loss of self-confidence. It can also lead to feelings of helplessness and insecurity.

What are the categories of abuse?

Abuse affects children’s academic, social, and emotional well-being. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) identifies three ACE categories: emotional, physical, and sexual abuse.

What is emotional abuse?

Emotional abuse harms a child’s mental health through verbal abuse, neglecting emotional connections, social deprivation, or excessive performance demands.

Why is it important for K-12 Staff to understand trauma?

Understanding trauma is crucial for K-12 staff because it helps them recognize the signs of trauma in students and respond with empathy and support. Trauma can significantly impact a child’s behavior, learning, and emotional well-being. When educators are trained to identify and address trauma, they create a safer, more supportive environment that fosters better academic outcomes, reduces behavioral issues, and promotes emotional healing for students.

Furthermore, the Crisis Prevention Institute recently found that more than half of all adolescents have reported being exposed to violence or abuse of various kinds by age 16. It also found that more than 2/3 of youth will experience a traumatic event that may develop into Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD, within an individual.

Trauma is the psychological response to a life event or experience that’s deeply disturbing or distressing to an individual. Contrary to common thought, trauma doesn’t need to come from war or a natural disaster. It can arise from personal experience and may vary significantly from person to person. Trauma may result from a sense of betrayal, loss of control, abuse of power, feelings of helplessness, pain, and/or loss of a loved one.
