As school staff members, we spend most of our days with students. It’s our job to give students the opportunity for growth and personal achievement. It’s also our responsibility to protect their well-being and keep them safe. If a student approaches you about thoughts of suicide or know someone who might be contemplating suicide, would you know what to do for them? When do you intervene? How do you communicate?
The good news is we’re all in a position to identify and respond to suicidal behavior among our students. This course provides school staff members with an overview of youth suicide awareness and several strategies for effective suicide prevention. By the end of this course, you’ll be able to describe the facts about youth suicide, identify warning signs and potential risk factors in students, apply intervention strategies after identifying warning signs in a student, and support healthy postvention practices after a student’s suicide death.
