The 2017 National Safety Council Congress and Expo, beginning Sept. 23 in Indianapolis, is a six-day event featuring dozens of educational sessions, as well as keynote addresses from industry leaders and an exhibition highlighting key products and services from organizations in the workplace health and safety space.

Keynote speakers
NSC CEO and President Deborah A.P. Hersman and former NASCAR driver Kyle Petty lead the opening keynote, “Racing to Zero – Safety that Works.” An executive forum titled “Serious Injury and Fatality Preventions – A View from the Top” follows. The Campbell Institute is the sponsor for the talk, with Laura Ambrose, global director for environmental health and safety operations for the Dow Chemical Company, Donald K. Martin, senior vice president at Behavioral Science and Technology, and Peter Waite, senior director for global health, safety and environment for Eli Lily and Company serving as panelists. These industry veterans will discuss sector-specific challenges ahead, share personal experiences and answer questions.

Tim Page-Bottorff, senior safety consultant for SafeStart, and Larry Wilson, CEO for SafeStart, host an occupational keynote called “The Future of Workplace Safety” Tuesday Sept. 26 from 8-9:30 a.m. The pair are expected to address changing Occupational Safety and Health Administration compliance standards and regulations, as well as other topics such as the evolution of risk management.

Bonnie St. John, CEO of the Blue Circle Leadership Institute and former director for human capital issues for the White House Economic Council, delivers a motivational address titled “Normal is Overrated – Aim Higher” Tuesday Sept. 26 from 1-2 p.m. St. John, an Olympic medalist and Rhodes Scholar, will offer advice on how professionals in the safety industry can carve fulfilling career paths and achieve optimal performance.

Corrie Pitzer, CEO for SAFEmap International, hosts the final keynote of the 2017 National Safety Council Congress and Expo Wednesday Sept. 27 from 8-9 a.m. During the session, called “The Seven Most Dangerous Ideas in Safety,” Pitzer will address the dangerous notions upon which many organizations base their workplace safety programs.

Educational opportunities
Workshops are scheduled to begin Saturday Sept. 23 and continue over the course of the event, occurring daily from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. John Vasquez, senior safety consultant for the NSC, leads the “Principles of Occupational Safety and Health,” offering holistic strategies on maintaining safety in the workplace.

There are several sessions centered on OSHA compliance. Monday Sept. 25 from 1:30 to 3 p.m., OSHA Regional Administrator Eric Harbin moderates “Industry and the Federal Government Working Together to Save Lives: An OSHA Alliance Success Story.” The session includes David Caruso, senior health communication specialist for Center For Disease Control’s National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Rick Ingram, chairman of the National STEPS Network, and Melissa Linton, a compliance assistance specialist for OSHA. Harbin collaborates with Dr. Thomas Hysler, chief medical officer for the Houston Area Safety Council, for another OSHA-centered session Wednesday Sept. 27 from 1-2 p.m. This workshop, called “Navigating OSHA Recordability,” addresses best practices for recording work-related injuries.

The 2017 National Safety Council Congress and Expo includes several never-before-scheduled workshops. Sunday September 24 Larry Wilson of SafeStart and his colleague Managing Director Christian Sylvestre will lead a daylong session called “Using Neuroscience to Achieve Safe Human Performance.” Wilson and Sylvestre plan to show safety leaders how they can achieve a deeper understanding of human cognitive processing and use this information to develop more effective programs. Namir George, manager of international consulting services for the NSC, hosts another new session Thursday Sept. 28. In this daylong workshop, called “Reducing Slips, Trips and Falls in the Workplace,” George will offer strategies reducing minor workplace hazards that often have larger implications.

Exhibition
More than 1,100 exhibitors are scheduled to showcase their goods and services. This exhibition will open Monday Sept. 25 at 9:30 a.m. and close Wednesday Sept. 27 at 1 p.m. Are occupational health and safety staff from your organization planning to attend the 2017 National Safety Council Congress and Expo?
