Pollution is the contamination of the environment by substances that harm plants, animals, people, or natural resources. Most people are familiar with the three major forms of pollution: air, water, and land. Polluting these natural resources has both local and global impacts. For example, air emissions from vehicles, power plants, and factories cause local air pollution such as smog but also contribute to changing climate. Water is essential for all life, so water pollution is a serious problem. Pollution can contaminate drinking water, harm aquatic life, and limit the use of water for recreation, transportation, and other activities. The impact of noise, light, heat, and visual pollution on surrounding neighborhoods should also be considered.
