What are air-purifying respirators used for?

Air-supplying respirators provide the user with clean, breathable air from an uncontaminated source. In general, they are used for more hazardous atmospheres.

What is a combination respirator?
A combination respirator is an airline respirator with a small escape cylinder so the user can get out of a hazardous atmosphere if something goes wrong with the primary air supply.

How is the right respirator chosen?
Selecting an appropriate respirator requires identifying the potential hazards and work requirements. Hazardous materials and their concentrations must be identified. If the atmosphere is oxygen deficient or immediately dangerous to life or health (IDLH), an SCBA or combination respirator is required. Air-purifying respirators can only be used when airborne hazards are known and concentrations are measured and remain below the protection limits of the respirator.
