May 2025: Celebrating, Honoring, and Recognizing Public Safety

Here at Vector Solutions, we’re recognizing May as Mental Health Awareness Month, but we’re also given an opportunity to reflect on the dedication and commitment law enforcement and public safety officials make every day through some impactful holidays this month.

Join us as we honor those who risk their lives to protect and serve our communities on these upcoming holidays:

National Correctional Officers Week

Beginning in 1984, the first full week in May has been declared National Corrections Officers Week. This May 4th– 10th is to be spent honoring the “professionalism, dedication, and courage exhibited by these officers,” in accordance with Ronald Reagan’s Presidential Proclamation.

These professionals dedicate their time to maintain safety within our prisons and correctional facilities, playing an essential role in helping keep our communities safe. They often take on a role of counselor, mentor, and teacher, often working behind the scenes to help rehabilitate and strengthen communities.

National Police Week & Peace Officers Memorial Day

Law enforcement officers can be the backbone of any community, protecting and serving in times of need. National Police Week, the second week in May (May 11- May 17, 2025), is an observance proclaimed in 1962 to provide special recognition to those who risk their lives, or have lost their lives, in the line of duty.

In the middle of National Police Week lies Peace Officer Memorial Day, on May 15th. A day to honor and remember those that have made the ultimate sacrifice to keep our communities safe.

The week is observed widely in Washington D.C. with events over the course of the week, including a 5K, a memorial service, and more. If you’d like to learn more or participate in any events surrounding National Police Week, you can find the schedule here.

These other days of recognition fall in May and give us an opportunity to highlight the sacrifices made by those who spend their careers keeping Americans safe.

National Missing Children’s Day, May 25th

National Missing Children’s Day, May 25th, we honor the efforts of law enforcement, 911 dispatch and telecommunicators, and other public safety professionals who work to keep our children safe. Since it was proclaimed in 1983, we use this day to share resources and raise awareness of child advocates that are tirelessly working to bring children home every day.

Memorial Day, May 26th

For over 150 years, on the last Monday in May, we take a day to observe, honor, and remember our armed forces veterans and soldiers who have passed while in service. The first national observance of Memorial Day, then called Decoration Day, occurred on May 30, 1868 (Library of Congress) as a way to honor those that lost their lives during the American Civil War, officially becoming a federal holiday in 1968.

United States Border Patrol Day, May 28th

On May 28, we honor United States Border Patrol Day. This day is meant to recognize the dangerous and honorable work of upholding the law and protecting lives. For over a century, our Border Patrol agents have been trusted with protecting the American people and our borders. The core values of vigilance, service to country, and integrity have remained in place for over 100 years, and remain strong to this day.
