As educational institutions increasingly rely on digital tools and AI technologies, protecting student information has become more complex and critical than ever. This comprehensive course equips educators and staff with essential knowledge of federal and state privacy regulations that govern the handling of student data in educational settings. Participants will explore the key provisions and practical applications of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA), Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), and state-level Consumer Privacy Acts (CPA). Participants will learn to distinguish between different types of protected data, recognize when privacy regulations apply in academic and administrative contexts, and identify situations requiring consultation with institutional compliance or legal offices.
