Industrial maintenance experts from across the country will convene in Kansas City, Missouri, Oct. 16-20 for the Society for Maintenance and Reliability Professionals Conference. The event includes keynote addresses from major figures in the industry, as well as hands-on workshops and track sessions and a trade show with more than 100 vendors.

Keynote addresses
Aerospace engineer Destin Sandlin will give the opening keynote address, Tuesday Oct. 17 at 7 a.m. Sandlin is best known for his educational YouTube series “Smarter Every Day,” in which he explores various topics, ranging from space station functionality to insect physiology. He has made countless appearances to discuss his thirst for knowledge, as well as his work as a missile flight test engineer.

Project manager and industrial maintenance strategist Jack Nicholas Jr. will give the closing keynote Wednesday Oct. 18 at 2:30 p.m. Nicholas began his 40-year career with the U.S Navy, where he maintained nuclear submarines and warships as a civilian engineer. Nicholas also worked as a consultant and trainer, helping government and private organizations in the U.S. and U.K. optimize their maintenance practices. In addition, he is known for developing the first motor circuit analysis suite.

Conference workshops
Approximately 30 workshops will take place at SMRP 2017. During the Levels of Leadership Excellence workshop on Oct.16, Andrew Garner, managing director, North America for Nexus Global Business Solutions, is expected to discuss effective leadership strategies.

Workshop leaders will, of course, delve into more granular, harder maintenance topics during SMRP 2017. For instance, Terry Harris, a certified maintenance and reliability professional for Reliable Process Solutions, will discuss machine lubrication best practices in a session titled “Lubrication Excellence Fundamentals,” which is scheduled occur Thursday Oct. 19 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The SMRP instructional sessions wrap up Friday Oct. 20 with “Implementing a Reliability Improvement Program from Scratch,” in which Mobius Institute Founder Jason Tranter offers attendees strategies for developing effective operational strategies for bolstering maintenance activities.

Facility tours
In addition to taking in keynote speeches and workshops at SMRP 2017, attendees can tour living, breathing production facilities with best-in-class maintenance staff. All facility tours take place Thursday Oct. 19.

The first happens at Nearman Water Treatment Plant in Wyandotte County Kansas from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Here, conference participants can see the two largest collector wells in the world in action and learn how onsite personnel keep them up and running. The second tour takes place from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Jeffrey Energy Center in St. Mary’s, Kansas, the largest coal plant in the state.

From 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. attendees can tour the General Motors Fairfax Assembly Plant in Kansas City, where GM assembly crews have churned out more than 12 million vehicles since 1945. The final tour takes place at the DuPont Nutrition and Health site in St. Joseph, Missouri. Here, workers produce 25 metric tons of dry food product per year.
