Pueblo Community College Works with Vector Solutions to Support a Safe Campus for All Students

The Challenge
Pueblo Community College, a Hispanic-Serving Institution and First-Generation-Serving Institution, enrolls 6,500 students ranging from 13 to 85 years old. It has more than 70 programs of study and offers both in-person and online courses. Founded in 1933, Pueblo Community College is “focused on providing academic and service excellence, without discrimination, to help its students acquire the 21st-century skills needed to better their lives.” With a diverse student population, it is crucial for the college to have timely and suitable training that addresses the various challenges students may face during their college journey, while also supporting the college in meeting state and federal compliance requirements.
“It’s important that colleges are ready to support their students. We need training that is responsive, and content that is relevant, and connects with our student population,” said Vernon James, the college’s dean of students.
The Choice
The college turned to Vector Solutions for its wide variety of engaging online courses for students. It implemented Vector’s Alcohol & Drug Misuse Prevention and Sexual Assault Prevention course libraries to help educate and support students on these critical issues impacting college campuses. The college chose Vector’s courses because:
- The courses are customizable. Administrators can adjust the modules and create relevant messaging for students.
- The courses support compliance. Maintaining compliance is important for a community college, and adopting Vector’s courses helps it meet specific compliance requirements to provide training around substance misuse and sexual assault prevention. The college is also looking into adopting Vector’s hazing prevention courses in order to comply with the recently passed federal Stop Campus Hazing Act.
Administrators especially appreciate the variety of courses Vector offers and how easy they were to implement. “I’ve demoed other trainings and platforms, but Vector has a wonderful catalog that is growing and so responsive,” said James. “The platform is super intuitive and provides the tools and instructions to do what you need to do.”

The Change
With the addition of Vector’s online courses, the college is able to:
- Provide students with the foundational strategies to understand what it means to be a student at Pueblo Community College and navigate common challenges associated with college life.
- Ensure students know how to access resources related to drug and alcohol misuse and sexual assault, and what to do in specific situations or during emergencies on campus, for instance, how to support a peer who is impacted by relationship violence or what to do if they believe a student has overdosed.
With Vector’s courses, Pueblo Community College is helping students of all ages and backgrounds gain knowledge and skills that support their transition into college life and equipping them with tools and resources to make good decisions throughout their college experience. A focus on student safety and well-being also supports the college’s larger goal of enabling students of all backgrounds to find their paths to success.
