When it comes to mental well-being, there are risk factors that apply to everyone. But specifically for us as athletes, here are some of the more significant ones.

This can, of course, be related to athletics, but also in academics and leadership areas.
High demands on time, such as practice, competitions, travel, hosting recruits, and rehab or physical therapy, and a culture of mental toughness in sports.

Potential warning signs and symptoms can appear differently for everyone, but there are some common ones that you should pay attention to. Some of these include changes in sleep, like sleeping a lot more or a lot less, loss of interest in things that were previously enjoyed, changes in academic performance and or engagement, changes in appetite, sudden weight loss or weight gain, new physical ailments without an obvious cause, like headaches, extreme mood changes, overwhelmed by daily activities, increase in use of alcohol or other drugs, feelings of hopelessness, isolation from friends or family, or signs of or talk about self harm.
