This session shows how Mohonasen Central School District (Rotterdam, NY) turned its Portrait into a K-12 North Star that shapes curriculum, instruction, professional learning, and school culture. Attendees will see how the district documents where those attributes actually show up in student learning.
K-12 leaders will leave with the statewide context behind NY Inspires and the Portrait of a Graduate framework, plus a practical model for moving a Portrait from a statement of values to evidence of student growth.

Learning Objectives
During this session, attendees will:
- Engage stakeholders to identify the attributes students need for success beyond high school.
- Connect Portrait attributes to state learning standards, curriculum, and professional learning across grade levels.
- Use New York’s Seals of Civic Readiness and Biliteracy, work-based learning, Career Exploration and Inquiry Program (CEIP), and student recognition to reinforce attributes through authentic experiences.
- Document and measure where students encounter, practice, and demonstrate Portrait attributes across the K-12 continuum.
Presenters
Laurel Logan-King is an experienced educational leader with nearly three decades of service in public education. She currently serves as Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction for the Rotterdam-Mohonasen Central School District, where she leads districtwide initiatives focused on curriculum, professional learning, student achievement, assessment, and instructional improvement. A key focus of Laurel’s leadership has been creating and implementing Mohonasen’s Portrait of a Graduate, establishing a shared vision for the skills, competencies, and attributes students need to thrive beyond graduation.
Throughout her career, she has held leadership positions spanning curriculum and instruction, pupil services, counseling, career development, and school administration. Laurel is passionate about innovative educational opportunities, strong instructional practices, and meaningful partnerships that support students and educators. She has extensive experience in strategic planning, program development, grant implementation, and administrator mentoring and has presented at state and regional conferences on assessment, mental health, early college programming, and college and career readiness.
Carol Eckl
K-12 Academic Administrator for Math and Science, Mohonasen Central School District
Carol has worked in education for over 20 years, starting as a high school science teacher before transitioning to administration. A variety of leadership roles have given her a broad understanding and detailed knowledge of data analysis, instructional technology, MTSS, curriculum and assessment design, and evidence-based instructional strategies – all of which she draws on in her current role as K-12 Academic Administrator for Math and Science at Mohonasen. She is excited to explore how shifts in the NYS education system can benefit the entire spectrum of students, and she looks forward to implementing these changes in thoughtful, measured, and innovative ways.
Lyndsey Lutz
Academic Administrator for Humanities, Mohonasen Central School District
Lyndsey Lutz has dedicated 19 years to education. She began her career teaching in urban elementary schools, where she served students and families for 14 years. She later transitioned into instructional coaching at the middle school level before moving into administration. She currently serves as the Academic Administrator for Humanities at Mohonasen Central School District, supporting K–12 English language arts and social studies curriculum, instruction, and professional learning.
