At sea level, inspired air has an oxygen concentration of approximately 21%. However, when atmospheric oxygen is insufficient or inaccessible to the patient, a supplemental source of oxygen is required. To compensate for breathing difficulties, disease complications, and a host of other considerations, its necessary to understand how oxygen affects homeostasis and what dose of supplemental oxygen to provide the patient.
