Ken Willette Honored with NAFTD Award for Excellence in Fire Training Leadership

For more than four decades, Ken Willette has dedicated his career to advancing the fire service through training, education, and leadership. That commitment is now being recognized with the North American Fire Training Directors (NAFTD) Award for Excellence in Fire Training Leadership.

The award, sponsored by Vector Solutions and its Acadis Readiness Suite, recognizes individuals who have demonstrated exceptional and sustained leadership in advancing fire service training and education and whose contributions have made a significant and lasting impact on firefighter preparedness and professional development.

As the first recipient of the award, Willette says he is humbled by the recognition and views it as a reflection of the many people he has worked alongside throughout his career.

“While I may be selected, I’d like to think that it’s a representation of those people I was blessed to work with,” Willette said. “I accept this award on behalf of them and in recognition of the work they did as well.”

Willette has been involved in fire service training since the early 1980s, serving at the department, state, national, and global levels. Throughout his career, his passion has remained rooted in a simple but powerful purpose: building the capabilities firefighters need to protect both civilian and firefighter lives.

“Real people, real training, saving real lives,” Willette said. “The people being trained today might be fighting a fire in someone’s home the next week. They took that personally.”

His approach to training leadership emphasizes listening, trust, innovation, and a commitment to looking beyond today’s challenges to prepare for what comes next.

“Ken has dedicated his career to making the fire service better through training, education, and the relationships he has built along the way,” said John Cunningham, Executive Director of NAFTD. “His willingness to share his experience, mentor others, and bring people together has left a lasting mark on our profession. I can think of no one more deserving of this recognition.”

For Willette, the recognition represents not only a distinguished career, but the collective work of the training leaders and professionals committed to ensuring firefighters have the knowledge, skills, and preparation they need when lives depend on them.
