Webinar Description

Wednesday, November 18, at 2:00 PM (ET) | 11:00 AM (PT)

Alcohol misuse remains one of the most persistent challenges on college campuses, and the people responsible for addressing it are already stretched thin.

Student-facing administrators balance crisis response, conduct, well-being, and campus safety, often with limited staff. Yet one of the most effective prevention resources is often underused: students’ families.

In this session, Dr. Rob Turrisi of Penn State University shares decades of research showing that brief, family-based interventions reduce high-risk drinking and its consequences. His Parent Handbook intervention is one of only two prevention approaches the Surgeon General’s Report rated as “efficacious” for preventing college student drinking, and NIAAA’s College AIM Matrix rates it as “effective.”

Student-facing administrators will leave with a clear understanding of why students do or don’t drink, which students benefit most from family-based prevention, and how this approach can reduce risky drinking even among students who arrive on campus with established high-risk habits.

They will also learn how families can become true prevention partners in ways that extend their team’s capacity rather than add to its workload, and how to share these low-cost, low-lift materials with their campus community.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the key factors that drive college students to drink, and why some choose not to, so you can target prevention messages more effectively.

  • Evaluate the evidence for brief family-based interventions and use it to make the case for this approach on your campus.

  • Pinpoint which students are most likely to benefit from family-based prevention, including those who arrive with established high-risk drinking habits.

  • Develop a plan to engage families as prevention partners that extends your team’s capacity without adding significant workload to staff.

  • Tailor family-based prevention materials to your campus and choose effective ways to share them with families.
