Campus Prevention Network National Insights Report

For a decade or more, students, parents, clinicians, and educators have been sounding the alarm that the mental well-being of college students is in real trouble.

Many institutions of higher education have sought to address this serious public health issue by increasing access to clinicians and providing other resources to support students in immediate mental health crises. While these efforts are essential, ultimately, they are inadequate for the task of preventing mental health crises and supporting the flourishing of college students. Prioritizing wellness as an antidote to illness has been the root of prevention work for decades.

As higher education institutions plan for fall 2023 and beyond, it is critical to consider mental health from this lens and to use data to build comprehensive mental well-being plans.
