An estimated 1,300 construction management professionals are expected to come together Oct. 7-10 for the Construction Management Association of America National Conference and Trade Show, which takes place at the Washington Hilton in Washington, D.C. The event features several educational sessions, as well as networking groups and keynotes. An extensive trade show unfolds throughout the event as well and includes over 1,200 exhibitors.

The Rising Construction Management Conference, which consists of two longer sessions, serves as the backdrop for the gathering. Here, attendees can gain insights from industry experts and explore developing construction management trends.

The Rising CM Conference
The first of two Rising CM Conference sessions begins Oct. 7 at 8 a.m. with opening remarks from organizers. Don’t miss John Morse, construction manager for the engineering consultant firm CH2M Hill, discus corporate ethics policies in the second session “Going Above and Beyond: Ethical Challenges and the Rising CM.”

Multiple presenters are scheduled to cover emerging construction management innovations over the course of the opening Rising CM session. Of note, Joel Timmins, senior associate for Markon Solutions, is slated to talk about agile workflows during “Agile Construction Management – Controlling Disruptive Technology,” which begins at 11:30 a.m. Dusan Selezan and Claire Mao, senior building information modeling specialists at Balfour Beatty Construction, will collaborate with Jacqueline Chen, a virtual design and construction specialist, at Synchro Software, on a presentation called “Exploring Virtual Reality for Planning, Design and Construction.”

The final Rising CM Conference session begins Oct. 8 at 7:30 a.m. Ellyn Lester, an associate professor at the Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey, hosts the first educational seminar at 8:15 a.m. titled “Making the Most of Your Mentoring Relationship,” which addresses talent development strategies for supervisors.

Additional Educational Sessions and Receptions

More than two dozen educational sessions follow the Rising CM Conference sessions. A good number of these center on innovation in the construction management space, including the must-attend “Building with Legos: BIM Execution Simulation for the Modern World,” which occurs Oct. 10 at 9:30 and 11 a.m. In this two-part session, Benjamin Crosby and Dwain Wood from W.G. Yates and Sons Construction Company, and Ralph Kreider, director of facilities for MBP, address the active, three-dimensional BIM process through Legos.

A number of sessions also touch on successful projects and the various factors that led to their completion. Joseph Abriatis and Christine Merdon of Architect of the Capitol, and Vincent Testa, construction manager for Jacobs Engineering Group, discuss the successful restoration of the U.S. Capitol Dome in “Historic Restoration of the United States Capitol Dome,” scheduled for Oct. 10 at 3 p.m.
